A four-day Mental Health awareness event was organized by Men-Tsee-Khang Mental Health Department from 17th to 20th August 2022 at Mundgod Tibetan Settlement. The team led by Dr. Tsultrim Namgyal, Tibetan Astro-Science Practitioner (TASP), Ms. Sonam Tsamchoe and Mr. Tenzin Kalden of the department; Dr. Tenzin Saldon and TASP Mr. Tsering of Men-Tsee-Khang branch clinic, Mundgod.
A day’s program consisted of a morning and an afternoon session, with a set of two speakers— each from Sowa-Rigpa (Tibetan Medicine) and Tibetan Astro-Science, who spoke from their respective perspectives on mental health, followed by a Q & A session. The sessions began with a brief introduction of the department and the event by Mr. Tenzin Kalden, our coordinator for this event. The speakers covered topics like causes & factors affecting mental health, psycho-somatic symptoms of mental disorders, and remedial measures for the same according to Sowa-Rigpa (Tibetan Medicine) and Tibetan Astro-Science.
This four-day event was planned and executed with a prime focus on influencing a maximum number of audiences in a short period. Beginning at Sambhota Tibetan School, Principal Mr. Sangpo Rinzin warmly welcomed the team. The speakers gave presentations on mental health care to around 310 students and 20 teaching and non-teaching staff members. Later, the team held events in the settlement camps and covered ten of those in six sessions, witnessing 373 participants. The team is overwhelmed with the positive and encouraging response from the residents.
The department would like to thank Mr. Thupten Tsering, Director of Men-Tsee-Khang and Mrs. Lhakpa Dolma, Settlement Officer of Mundgod Tibetan Settlement, for their support towards this mental health program, and Mr. Karma Jinpa (Kargu) for easing the daily commute of our team by lending his motorcycle throughout the event. We would also like to thank those who have directly or indirectly associated with us in making this event productive.
