110th Founding Anniversary Celebration of Men-Tsee-Khang

On March 23, 2026, Men-Tsee-Khang celebrated its 110th founding anniversary since its establishment in Lhasa, Tibet, in 1916 by His Holiness the 13th Dalai Lama, and its 65th year since its re-establishment in Dharamsala, India, in 1961 by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

Mr. Jhampa Phuntsok, Health Secretary of the Central Tibetan Administration, graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest, while Mr. Lobsang Jinpa, Secretary from the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, attended as the Special Guest. Many other distinguished guests, including the personal physicians to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and heads of various Institutes, were also present.

In the presence of distinguished guests, the leadership of Men-Tsee-Khang, College faculty members, and staff, the ceremony commenced at 10:00 AM at the Men-Tsee-Khang College hall. The event began with the lighting of butter lamp at the altar of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Yuthok Yonten Gonpo by the Chief Guest. This was followed by the singing of the Tibetan and Indian national anthems and recitation of the Yuthok prayer for auspiciousness, during which the ceremonial rice delicacy Desil was served to all the attendees.

Dr. Tsering Norbu, Deputy Director of Men-Tsee-Khang, presented the annual report, highlighting the Institute’s history since its establishment, its achievements, and its ongoing efforts in providing free and concessional medical services to thousands of people.

The event coincided with the convocation ceremony for eighteen students of the 23rd batch Sowa-Rigpa Medicine and eight students of the 13th batch of Tibetan Astro-science, who were conferred certificates by the Chief Guest. Certificates were also awarded to degree holders of Menpa Nyewe Bumrampa (M. Phil in Tibetan Medicine) and Tsipa Nyewe Bumrampa (M.Phil in Tibetan Astro-science). In addition, staff members completing 20 and 30 years of service were honoured with commendation certificates and gifts.

The Special Guest also launched 15 different publications by the Document and Publication Department, Research Department and Materia & Medica Department. The event further recognised the outgoing student from 23rd Sowa-Rigpa medical batch who completed the full oral recitation of the Gyud-Sum (three out of four tantras) as well as the top performers of the 25th and 26th medical batches in the annual examinations.

In his keynote address, the Chief Guest commended the development of the Institute and encouraged continued efforts to elevate the benefits of Tibetan Medicine to greater heights.

The General Secretary of Men-Tsee-Khang, Mr. Dhondup Palden concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
